The verdict

Two premium brands that trade blows at every price. Trek wins on dealer coverage and value, Specialized on fit systems and top-end race tech.

  • Pick Trek for the wider UK dealer network and slightly keener mid-range pricing.
  • Pick Specialized for Body Geometry fitting and the race-bred Tarmac platform.
  • Both offer lifetime frame warranties and both depreciate at a similar rate.
  • At the very top of the range you are paying for marginal gains either way.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Trek or Specialized better value for money?

Trek edges it slightly at entry and mid-range prices, partly because their UK dealer network is bigger and tends to be more competitive on pricing. At the top end you're paying for fairly marginal differences either way. Both charge premium prices for premium bikes.

Which brand has better customer support in the UK?

Trek wins on availability because they simply have more dealers, so you're less likely to have to travel far for a warranty claim or service. Specialized dealers tend to be larger, better-stocked shops though. Both honour warranties without fuss in our experience.

Are Trek and Specialized bikes made in the same factories?

Some are, actually. Giant in Taiwan manufactures for multiple brands including Trek for certain models. Specialized uses various suppliers too. The really premium carbon frames (Emonda, Tarmac SL7 and so on) come from dedicated facilities with tighter quality control.

Which holds resale value better?

They depreciate at roughly the same rate, around 40-50% in the first two years. Iconic models like the Tarmac or Madone hold up better than entry-level bikes. In practice, condition matters more than brand when it comes to resale value.
