Trek Emonda SL 5 buying guide
The Emonda is Trek's lightweight climbing bike and it is one of the lightest production road frames in the world. If you live in a hilly area, ride in the mountains on holiday, or simply hate the feeling of dragging weight uphill, the Emonda is built for you. The name comes from the French word "emonder" meaning to prune or strip away, and that philosophy shows in every gram saving detail.
Trek has positioned the Emonda between the aero Madone and the endurance Domane. It is the pure road bike of the range, designed for riders who want to go up fast and come down even faster. The frame is remarkably light for a production bike, with the SLR version dipping below 700g for the frame alone.
On the used market, the Emonda is popular with upgraders and racers. You will find plenty of well maintained examples because the riders who buy these bikes tend to look after them. Prices reflect the quality, but they are fair given what you get.
What it's like to ride
Light and lively. The Emonda feels like it wants to dance up climbs. Stand on the pedals and it responds instantly, almost springing forward with each stroke. The handling is sharper than the Domane, more like a traditional race bike, and the frame stiffness is excellent without being harsh.
On descents, the Emonda is stable enough for fast group riding but it does not have the planted, unflappable feel of the Domane or Madone. In crosswinds, the lighter weight means it gets pushed around a little more. On smooth roads it is a joy. On rough, potholed UK roads, you will feel every imperfection. It is a race bike and it rides like one.
Who it's for
Hill climbers, hill climb racers, and riders who live in hilly terrain. If your local club run involves 1,000 metres of climbing, the Emonda is your friend. Also suits road racers who prioritise weight over aerodynamics. Less suited to flat, fast riding where the Madone's aero advantage matters more.
Trek Emonda SL 5 year guide
The 2021 redesign is the pivot point. It brought Kammtail tube shaping for better aero performance while keeping the low weight. Pre-2021 models are pure climbers with no aero concessions. Both are excellent but the 2021 onwards bikes are more versatile. The ALR aluminium version was updated in 2022 and is one of the best alloy road frames ever made. Look at a 2021 or 2022 SL 6 for the best carbon value.
Trek Emonda SL 5, key things to know
- The ALR aluminium version is a hidden gem. Proper Emonda geometry and handling at a fraction of the carbon price
- Check the seatmast on SLR models. These use a proprietary system that limits saddle height adjustment range
- SL 6 with Shimano Ultegra is the best value carbon option. The jump to SLR adds marginal weight savings for big money
- Look at the bottom bracket standard. Newer T47 models are better for long term maintenance than older press fit versions
- If you race, check the UCI weight limit (6.8kg minimum). Some high spec Emondas need ballast to comply
