The verdict

Heading to trail centres and technical descents? Buy a mountain bike. Covering distance on mixed surfaces and fire roads? A gravel bike is faster and lighter.

  • MTB wins for technical trails, descents and proper off-road riding.
  • Gravel wins for road efficiency, distance and bikepacking.
  • A gravel bike handles fire roads and light singletrack, not rocky technical terrain.
  • Plenty of riders end up owning both for different days out.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can a gravel bike handle mountain bike trails?

Fire roads and buffed-out singletrack, absolutely. Rocky technical stuff and steep descents, not a chance. Those drop bars and skinnier tyres seriously limit your control when things get gnarly. If you're heading to trail centres regularly, you need a proper mountain bike.

Which is better for bikepacking?

For most UK bikepacking routes, we'd pick a gravel bike. It covers distance efficiently and handles bridleways and fire roads fine. If you're planning genuinely remote Scottish Highland routes with technical sections, a hardtail MTB makes more sense. Match the bike to your route.

Can I add suspension to a gravel bike?

There are a few options like the Lauf Grit fork, but most gravel bikes are designed rigid and adding suspension messes with the handling and weight distribution. If you want suspension, you're honestly better off buying something that was designed for it.

Which is more fun?

Completely different kinds of fun. Mountain bikes give you that adrenaline rush on proper trails. Gravel bikes give you freedom to just ride wherever without worrying about what's round the corner. Plenty of cyclists end up owning both.
