How Buying Works on Cyclesite

Cyclesite is a UK marketplace for used bikes, built around two safe ways to buy. Every listing is automatically checked against stolen-bike databases before it goes live, and every payment is handled through Stripe with optional Buyer Protection.

Two Ways to Buy

1. Private classified, collection in person. Find a bike near you, message the seller through the platform, arrange to view it. Payment still goes through Cyclesite at checkout to keep both sides protected, but you collect the bike yourself and save on shipping.

2. Buyer Protection with delivery. You pay through Cyclesite, we hold the funds in escrow, the seller ships via our courier partner, and you have 48 hours after delivery to confirm the bike matches the listing. If it doesn't, you get a full refund. Buyer Protection is 3.5% of the sale price, shown on the order summary at checkout.

The Buying Process, Step by Step

1. Search. Filter by category, price, size, location, condition, brand, and groupset. Use the map view to find bikes near you. 2. Check the listing. Every bike has already passed our automated stolen check against UK stolen-bike and police databases. Read the description, zoom into the photos, and note the condition rating. 3. Message the seller. Ask any questions through the platform. Most sellers respond within 24 hours. 4. Pick your route at checkout:

  • Private classified, in-person collection. You and the seller agree the meet-up through the platform. Payment happens directly between you at the handover. Cyclesite is not involved in the bike payment.
  • Buyer Protection with delivery. You pay through Stripe (card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Klarna, or Clearpay). Cyclesite holds the funds in escrow. Our courier partner collects from the seller and delivers to your door.

5. Inspect. For collection, check the bike against the listing before paying the seller. For Buyer Protection delivery, you have 48 hours after delivery to inspect and raise any dispute through your order page. 6. Ride. For Buyer Protection sales, the seller is paid once the 48-hour inspection window passes without a dispute.

What to Check Before Buying

  • Frame number, visible in the photos or asked for in a message. We check it against stolen databases, but you can verify independently at UK stolen-bike databases.
  • Condition rating, match the wording to the photos. A bike rated "Excellent" should show only light cosmetic wear. Disagreement between rating and photos is a red flag.
  • Size, confirmed in the listing. Use our [size guide](/help/buying/condition-ratings) if you are unsure.
  • Service history, sellers with documented service history are typically more careful owners. Ask in a message if it is not listed.
  • Seller profile, check how long the seller has been on Cyclesite and any previous sales.

What's Covered by Buyer Protection

  • Bike not matching the listing's condition rating
  • Wrong model, year, size, or specification
  • Undisclosed damage or mechanical faults
  • Lost or damaged in transit (fully insured by the courier)
  • Seller failing to ship on time

Buyer Protection does not cover change of mind or a correctly-listed size that turns out not to suit you. For full detail, see [how Buyer Protection works](/help/buying/buyer-protection).

Why Cyclesite Doesn't Accept Cash

All payments must go through the platform so you are covered by Buyer Protection, our dispute system, and delivery insurance. A seller asking you to pay cash, bank transfer, PayPal, or any method outside Cyclesite is breaking our terms of service. Report them at [report a listing](/help/safety/report-listing) and we will investigate.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an account to buy a bike on Cyclesite?

You can browse every listing without an account. To message a seller or complete a purchase, you need a free Cyclesite account, it takes about 30 seconds to create.

How do I pay for a bike on Cyclesite?

All payments go through Stripe at checkout. You can pay by card (Visa, Mastercard, Amex), Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Klarna and Clearpay on eligible purchases. Cash and bank transfers are not permitted, they bypass Buyer Protection and our dispute system.

What is Buyer Protection and do I need it?

Buyer Protection holds your payment in escrow until you have had the bike for 48 hours. If it does not match the listing, you can return it at no cost and get a full refund. It is 3.5% of the sale price, optional, and recommended for any bike you cannot see before paying. See [how Buyer Protection works](/help/buying/buyer-protection).

What if the bike is different from the listing when it arrives?

If you bought with Buyer Protection, you have 48 hours from delivery to raise a dispute through your order page. Upload photos, describe the issue, and submit. Our team reviews within one working day and arranges a free return if the dispute is upheld. Do not return the bike yourself, we arrange collection.

Is it safer to buy on Cyclesite than on Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree?

Every Cyclesite listing is automatically checked against UK stolen-bike databases before it goes live. Payment runs through Stripe with Buyer Protection, and disputes are handled by our team. Informal marketplaces offer none of these, you pay cash, you meet strangers, and there is no recourse if something is wrong.
