The Real Numbers
Road bikes are the biggest category in the UK used bike market, and prices vary enormously. A 2020 Specialized Allez in good condition and a 2020 Specialized Tarmac in good condition occupy completely different price brackets, even though they're both "used Specialized road bikes."
Here's what to expect in 2026.
Entry-Level Road Bikes (Originally £500-1,000)
These are bikes like the Specialized Allez, Trek Domane AL, Giant Contend, Cannondale CAAD Optimo, and Boardman SLR.
| Age | Condition | Typical Resale |
|---|---|---|
| 1 year | Excellent | £350-700 |
| 2-3 years | Good | £250-500 |
| 4-5 years | Fair | £150-350 |
Key insight: Entry-level aluminium road bikes depreciate fastest in year one, then plateau. A 3-year-old Allez isn't worth much less than a 2-year-old one.
Mid-Range Road Bikes (Originally £1,000-2,500)
Bikes like the Trek Emonda SL, Specialized Roubaix, Giant TCR Advanced, Cannondale SuperSix, and Canyon Ultimate CF.
| Age | Condition | Typical Resale |
|---|---|---|
| 1 year | Excellent | £700-1,800 |
| 2-3 years | Good | £500-1,400 |
| 4-5 years | Fair | £350-1,000 |
Key insight: This is the sweet spot for used bike buyers. Groupset spec matters enormously, a bike with Shimano 105 will sell for significantly less than the same frame with Ultegra.
Premium Road Bikes (Originally £2,500-6,000+)
Think Canyon Aeroad CF SLX, Specialized Tarmac SL7, Trek Madone, Cervelo S5, Factor O2.
