The E-Bike Opportunity
New e-bikes are expensive, £2,000-5,000 for anything decent. But the used market is maturing fast, and prices are falling as early adopters upgrade and fleet bikes hit resale. A 2-year-old e-bike that cost £3,000 new can now be found for £1,500-2,000.
The question is: should you buy one?
The Battery Question
The battery is the most expensive single component on an e-bike (£400-800 to replace). It's also the one thing that degrades with time and use, regardless of how well the bike is maintained.
What to check:
Cycle count: Most modern e-bike batteries (Bosch, Shimano STEPS, Fazua, Brose) last 500-1,000 full charge cycles before losing significant capacity. Ask the seller how often they charged it and roughly how many miles they've covered.
Range test: Ask the seller what range they get on a full charge. Compare this to the manufacturer's original spec. If they're getting less than 60% of the original claimed range, the battery is significantly degraded.
Age: Even unused, lithium-ion batteries degrade over time. A 4-year-old battery that's barely been used will still have lost some capacity. 1-3 years old is the sweet spot.
Brand matters: Bosch batteries are the gold standard, well-documented diagnostics, available replacements, and good longevity. Shimano STEPS is close behind. Proprietary batteries from less-known brands can be impossible or very expensive to replace.
Motor Types
Mid-drive motors (Bosch, Shimano, Brose, Fazua): Mounted at the bottom bracket. Better weight distribution, more natural riding feel, better for hills. More expensive to service but more reliable.
Hub motors (front or rear wheel): Simpler, cheaper, but heavier and less balanced. Common on budget e-bikes. Harder to fix if they fail, often means a new wheel.
What to check: Listen for unusual noises when the motor engages. A whine is normal; grinding or clicking is not. Check that the motor cuts off cleanly at 15.5mph (the UK legal limit).
