What Five Hundred Pounds Gets You
Five hundred pounds is the sweet spot of the used bike market. Below this, you're usually looking at older bikes or budget brands. Above it, you're into mid-range territory where choices multiply.
At this price, you can genuinely get a bike that was £1,000-1,500 new, just 2-3 years old, in good condition. That's a lot of bike.
Best Used Road Bikes Under Five Hundred Pounds
Specialized Allez (2019-2023), £250-450
The default entry-level road bike for good reason. Aluminium frame, usually Shimano Claris or Sora groupset. Comfortable geometry that doesn't punish beginners. Huge numbers sold means easy to find one in your size.
Trek Domane AL (2020-2023), £300-480
Trek's endurance road bike. Slightly more upright than the Allez, with better vibration damping. Good for longer rides and UK roads (which are rough).
Giant Contend (2019-2023), £200-400
Consistently the best value in the category. Giant's direct-to-dealer model means lower new prices, which translates to even better used deals. Identical quality to Trek and Specialized at a lower price.
Boardman SLR 8.6/8.8 (2020-2023), £200-380
Halfords brand, but don't let that put you off. Boardman bikes punch well above their weight in spec. The SLR 8.8 with Shimano 105 for under £400 is exceptional value.
Best Used Gravel Bikes Under Five Hundred Pounds
Boardman ADV 8.6 (2021-2023), £300-480
The cheapest way into gravel from a reputable brand. Solid spec, disc brakes, room for wide tyres.
Vitus Substance (2020-2022), £280-450
Wiggle/CRC house brand, now discontinued from those retailers but excellent bikes. Well-specced and often overlooked, which means bargains.
Triban GRVL 120 (Decathlon), £200-350
Decathlon's gravel bike. New they're already cheap; used they're a steal. Basic spec but perfectly functional.
Best Used Hybrids Under Five Hundred Pounds
Trek FX 2/FX 3 (2019-2023), £200-400
The benchmark hybrid. FX 2 is the volume model; FX 3 adds carbon fork and better groupset. Both are excellent commuters.
Specialized Sirrus (2019-2023), £200-380
Specialized's hybrid range. Slightly sportier than the Trek FX. The Sirrus X models add wider tyre clearance for light off-road use.
Giant Escape (2019-2023), £150-300
The value pick. You'll struggle to find better spec for less money. Giant's aluminium frames are excellent.
