What indoor training is
Indoor training means riding a bike that stays in one place. Instead of covering ground, you turn the pedals against a device that provides resistance. The common setup pairs a normal road bike with a turbo trainer, a compact frame that holds the bike steady and loads the drivetrain so you have something to push against.
For years this was a plain affair, a bike clamped to a noisy roller in a cold garage. It has changed. Most riders now run a trainer alongside an app such as Zwift or TrainerRoad. Zwift places your rider in a virtual world and lets you ride with other people in real time. TrainerRoad builds structured workouts around power targets. Either way the trainer sends data to the app, and on the more capable units the app sends resistance changes back.
The result is a session you can measure and repeat. You can hold a set effort for a fixed time, follow a plan week by week, or join a group ride without leaving the house. Types of turbo trainer
There are three broad designs, and the differences matter more than the badge on the box.
Wheel-on trainers keep the rear wheel fitted. The tyre presses against a roller, and friction between the two creates the resistance. These are the cheapest to buy and the easiest to fold away, which suits a spare room or a shared space. The trade-offs are noise, since the tyre and roller make a steady hum, and accuracy, because the contact point slips slightly under hard efforts. The tyre also wears where it meets the roller, so a dedicated trainer tyre is worth fitting if you ride indoors often. It saves your road tyre and copes better with the heat.
Direct-drive trainers take the rear wheel off entirely. The bike attaches to the trainer at the rear dropouts, and the chain drives a cassette mounted on the trainer itself. With no tyre in the loop, these units are quieter, more stable and more accurate, which is why most committed indoor riders favour them. They cost more and tend to be heavier, so they suit a permanent spot rather than something you pack away each night.
Rollers are the outlier. The bike is not clamped to anything. It sits on three spinning drums and you balance it as you pedal, much as you would on the road. Rollers build a smooth pedal stroke and sharpen bike handling, but most have no way to vary the resistance, so they are less suited to precise workouts. They reward practice and punish a lapse in concentration.

Smart trainers and apps
"Smart" describes what a trainer can do, not its shape. A smart trainer measures your power and broadcasts it wirelessly, over Bluetooth or ANT+, to an app on a phone, tablet or computer. The app can then control the resistance in return. Both wheel-on and direct-drive units can be smart, though the higher-end models are almost all direct-drive.
Two control modes do most of the work. In ERG mode you set a target power and the trainer holds you there. Pedal slower and it adds resistance, pedal faster and it eases off, so you stay on the number whatever your cadence. That is what makes an interval session so exact. In simulation mode the trainer varies the resistance to match the gradient of the virtual road. When your on-screen rider reaches a climb the pedals get heavier, and a descent lets them spin freely.
A "dumb" trainer does none of this. Its resistance is fixed, or set by hand with a lever, and it does not talk to any app. You can still ride Zwift on one by adding a separate speed sensor, but the world will not respond to the hill in front of you, and your power is estimated rather than measured. Why ride indoors
The appeal is mostly practical. Indoor training works in any weather, at any hour, whatever the daylight. British winters, short, wet and dark, are the reason many riders buy a trainer in the first place. A ride that would mean cold hands and poor visibility outside becomes a warm hour at home.
It is also efficient. There are no junctions, no traffic and no coasting, so an hour indoors is an hour of actual pedalling. Workouts are repeatable, which lets you measure progress properly and compare one week with the next. Buying a trainer used
Trainers hold up well second-hand, since there is little to wear out beyond the belt and bearings, so the used market is a sensible place to look. A few checks separate a good buy from a frustrating one.
First, confirm whether it is smart or dumb. This is the single biggest difference in what the unit can do, and it is easy to misread from a photo, so ask directly. On a direct-drive unit, check whether a cassette is included, because fitting one adds cost and needs to match your bike's gearing. Look at the flywheel weight too, since a heavier flywheel carries more momentum and feels more like the road.
Check the headline figures the seller should know: the maximum resistance and the steepest gradient it can simulate. Confirm the connectivity, as a unit that offers both Bluetooth and ANT+ pairs with almost anything you already own. Finally, make sure the firmware is still supported, because an abandoned model can lose app compatibility over time. A quick search of the model name will tell you whether the maker still issues updates.

Setting up at home
A trainer needs less space than you might think, but a little planning makes it far more pleasant. Noise is the first thing to manage. Direct-drive units are quiet, but a wheel-on trainer carries through a floor, so think about neighbours and the time of day.
Heat is next. With no breeze to cool you, indoor riding gets hot quickly, so a fan pointed at your body makes a real difference to how long you last. A mat under the trainer catches sweat and drips, protects the floor and cuts vibration through the building. Sweat is corrosive, so wipe the bike down afterwards.
Set the trainer on a firm, level surface. On a wheel-on trainer the rear wheel is raised by the trainer, so the front sits lower, and a front-wheel block or riser levels the bike and keeps your position natural.
