Trek Rail 5 buying guide
The Rail is Trek's long travel electric mountain bike, and the Rail 5 is the entry level build in the range. It has an aluminium frame, full suspension and a Bosch Performance Line CX mid-drive motor. The battery sits inside the down tube and comes out for charging.
Higher numbers in the range bring better suspension and components, and the models with a decimal in the name, such as the 9.7 and 9.8, have carbon frames. The Rail 5 is the cheapest way into the range.
Trek has revised the Rail several times and labels the versions by generation. Battery, display and electronics differ between generations, so find out which one you are looking at.

What it's like to ride
A big, capable e-MTB. The motor turns climbs you would otherwise push up into climbs you can ride, which means more descents in a day. The weight and the long travel suspension keep it planted on rough ground.
That weight is the trade-off. It is harder to lift over a gate or onto a rack than an unassisted trail bike, and it is less lively on tight, slow trails. The assistance cuts out at 15.5mph, as on every road legal e-bike in the UK.
Who it's for
Riders who want a full power e-MTB for trail centres and big hill days and do not need top end suspension. It suits someone buying their first e-MTB. If you want a light bike that rides like an unassisted one, this is the wrong tool.

Buying tips
- A Bosch eBike dealer can run a diagnostic report showing total mileage and battery charge cycles. Ask the seller for one, or pay a shop to do it before you buy
- Check the battery key and the charger are both included
- Ask whether the motor has ever been derestricted. A modified e-bike is not road legal as a bicycle in the UK
- Lift the bike by the saddle and feel for knocking from the rear suspension pivots
- Look at the fork and shock for scratched stanchions and oil leaks, and ask when the suspension was last serviced
- Ask for the original receipt and the frame number, and run a stolen check before you pay
