# How big is the UK used bike market?

> Nobody knows precisely, and anyone quoting a confident figure is estimating. The UK has no central record of second-hand bicycle sales: private sales leave no registration trail, no VAT record and no transfer of title, because bicycles are not registered vehicles. What can be counted is supply. At any moment there are tens of thousands of used bicycles advertised across the UK's general classifieds and specialist sites. Cyclesite tracks 190,000+ UK used-bike asking-price observations across 1,600+ brands, and publishes a monthly price index from those listings, chain-linked from August 2024. That measures what bikes are advertised for, which is not the same as what they sell for.

## Why there is no reliable transaction figure

A bicycle in the UK has no registration document, no licensing authority and no compulsory insurance. When one changes hands privately, nothing anywhere records it. Trade bodies measure new-bike retail because retailers report sales; nobody measures the used market the same way, because there is no equivalent reporting population. Estimates that circulate are usually built by taking a new-bike unit figure and applying an assumed resale ratio, which is an assumption stacked on an assumption. Everything Cyclesite holds beyond a confirmed sale price is an asking price, and is labelled as one. Cyclesite holds 20 sale prices a seller has come back and confirmed, and that count is small because confirming a private sale requires the seller to return and say what they actually got, and most never do. Publishing a confirmed-sale count at all is the honest ceiling on what any UK party can currently say about transaction prices, including us.

## What can be measured, and is

Supply and asking prices can be measured directly, because adverts are public and dated. Cyclesite's index tracks the monthly mean and median asking price of used bikes by category, chain-linked so the series survives changes in the mix of bikes advertised, with the sample size and a dispersion flag published alongside every point. Months with thin samples are marked rather than smoothed over. The full series is downloadable as a CSV and free to reuse with attribution. Where a month's sample is too small or too scattered to support a claim, the published figure carries a high-dispersion flag instead of being quietly dropped, so a reader can see the limits of the series rather than infer a precision it does not have.

## Asking price is not sale price, and the gap matters

An asking price is an offer, not a transaction. A bicycle advertised at £1,200 may sell at £1,000, may sell at the asking price, or may never sell at all and be relisted three months later at £900. An index of asking prices tracks what sellers believe, and belief moves more slowly than the market does. It is still the most useful series available for the UK used-bike market, because it is the only one that can be measured continuously and honestly, but it should be read as a supply-side indicator rather than as a price the buyer pays.

## What we deliberately do not publish

Cyclesite does not publish a sold-price index, a regional selling-speed figure, or a UK transaction-volume estimate. All three are routinely quoted elsewhere and none of them can currently be measured honestly from any UK data set we know of. Selling speed in particular is published nationally and never by city: the sample thins out immediately once it is split geographically, and a local figure built on a handful of bikes reads as authoritative while being close to noise.

## Average used bike prices by category (UK)

Live figures from the Cyclesite marketplace. Asking prices, not confirmed sales.

| Category | Average price | Sample size |
|---|---|---|
| Road Bikes | £1,268 | 43 |
| Mountain Bikes | £1,256 | 27 |
| Electric Bikes | £2,043 | 13 |

## Related questions

### How many used bikes are for sale in the UK at any one time?

Tens of thousands, spread across general classifieds, marketplace apps and specialist sites, with the large general platforms holding the great majority of the inventory. The figure moves seasonally, rising through spring and easing off in late autumn.

### Is the UK used-bike market growing?

Supply measured as live adverts has grown, and the published price index shows the direction of asking prices by category month on month. Whether transactions are growing cannot be answered from any public UK data set, because transactions are not recorded.

### Can I use Cyclesite’s price index in my own research?

Yes. The full series is published as a CSV with its methodology and is free to reuse with attribution to Cyclesite. The methodology page sets out the calculation rules, outlier treatment, chain-linking and revision policy.
